Pakistan Marks 27th Anniversary of Nuclear Tests on Youm-e-Takbeer

Islamabad – Pakistan on Tuesday commemorated the 27th anniversary of its nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, a historic day celebrated annually as *Youm-e-Takbeer*. The day marks Pakistan’s emergence as the first Islamic nuclear power and the seventh globally, restoring the strategic balance in South Asia in response to India’s nuclear tests earlier that month.

In 1998, under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan carried out five successful nuclear tests in the Chagai district of Balochistan, just weeks after India’s five nuclear explosions. A sixth test followed two days later, making Pakistan’s response both symbolic and strategic.

On this national occasion, special ceremonies and events are being held across the country to honor the scientists, armed forces, and leadership who played a pivotal role in the nuclear program. The day is being observed as a public holiday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, said,

> “Today marks 27 years since Pakistan became a nuclear power. This year, we celebrate Youm-e-Takbeer at a moment of national pride and victory. Pakistan recently triumphed in a conflict imposed upon us, emerging with dignity and resilience.”

He also praised former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for resisting international pressure and economic threats, and for making the bold decision to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.

The Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the heads of the armed forces also extended congratulations to the nation, reaffirming the military’s unwavering commitment to national defense.

> “Youm-e-Takbeer reminds us of the historic moment when Pakistan became a nuclear state. Our strategic capability is a national trust and a reflection of the people’s will,” their joint statement read.

The day stands as a powerful reminder of Pakistan’s resolve to protect its sovereignty, independence, and national interests through unity, strength, and scientific advancement.
