From Sialkot Streets to PSL Glory: Sikandar Raza’s Inspiring Journey from Fighter Pilot Dreams to Cricket Stardom

Karachi:Zimbabwe’s former T20 captain and Test all-rounder **Sikandar Raza** once dreamed of flying jets for the Pakistan Air Force — but fate had other plans. Today, he’s a cricketing hero who played a pivotal role in **Lahore Qalandars’ PSL 10 victory**, continuing a remarkable journey from the streets of **Sialkot** to the stadiums of international cricket.

Raza stunned fans with his **match-winning performance in the PSL 10 final**, smashing a six off his first ball against Mohammad Amir and sealing the game with another six and a winning four in the final over against Faheem Ashraf. The Qalandars lifted the trophy for the **third time**, with Raza’s last-minute arrival from the UK turning into a fairytale finish.

### A Long Way from Sialkot

Born in **Sialkot**, Sikandar Raza’s early cricket days were spent playing **tape-ball in the streets**. His family later moved to **Zimbabwe**, where his father continued his car trading business. Initially aspiring to be a **PAF fighter pilot**, Raza couldn’t pass the eye test and moved with his parents to **Scotland**, earning a **degree in software engineering**.

Despite playing **club cricket** in Scotland, a professional career wasn’t on his radar until 2009, when he decided to pursue cricket seriously. That decision changed his life — by **2013**, he made his **Test debut for Zimbabwe against Pakistan in Harare**.

### National Fame and International Impact

Sikandar Raza became a household name in Zimbabwe, to the extent that fans started singing **“Munya”**, a song originally dedicated to a famous footballer, in Raza’s honor at cricket grounds.

He has produced **match-winning performances** in several international matches, but none more memorable than the **2022 T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan** in Perth. Despite a modest batting display, Raza took **three crucial wickets** — Shan Masood, Shadab Khan, and Haider Ali — turning the game on its head and leading Zimbabwe to a **historic 1-run victory**.

Speaking about that night, Raza recalled being unable to sleep due to the pressure and importance of the match. “My body was asleep, but my mind was awake,” he said, describing how he studied notes and visualized his strategy throughout the night.

### A PSL Final Like No Other

Raza’s journey to the PSL final was cinematic. Just after a Test match in England, **Lahore Qalandars’ COO Sameen Rana** called him to urgently fly to Pakistan. With no flights available from Nottingham, Raza rushed to **Birmingham**, caught a flight to **Dubai**, drove to **Abu Dhabi**, and finally landed in **Lahore at 6:50 PM**, just 40 minutes before the match began.

At **7:25 PM**, he walked onto the field for the national anthem. By **7:30 PM**, he was facing the first delivery — and by the end of the night, he had **etched his name in PSL history**.

### A Proud Zimbabwean

Now settled in Zimbabwe with his wife and two children, Raza proudly calls himself Zimbabwean. Despite his roots in Pakistan, he embraces his adopted homeland, representing them with passion and pride.

From the narrow lanes of Sialkot to the **floodlit fields of global T20 leagues**, Sikandar Raza’s journey is a tale of resilience, late-blooming brilliance, and a dream fulfilled — not in a cockpit, but under cricket’s brightest lights.
