Record-Breaking Heatwave Grips Balochistan as Quetta Faces Outages and Public Outcry

Quetta:A severe heatwave swept across Balochistan on Monday, breaking temperature records in multiple cities, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The highest temperature of the year was recorded in Sibi at a scorching **51°C**, while other cities also faced extreme heat: **Turbat at 44°C**, **Nokundi at 45°C**, and **Chaman at 40°C**.

The provincial capital **Quetta** sweltered under **39°C**, with surrounding regions such as **Ziarat (30°C)**, **Kalat (34°C)**, and **Zhob (37°C)** experiencing significant heat as well. Even coastal cities like **Gwadar (36°C)** and **Jiwani (35°C)** reported temperatures well above seasonal norms.

Meteorologists have warned that the heatwave may persist in the coming days, advising the elderly, children, and heart patients to take extra precautions. Government advisories urge citizens to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and limit unnecessary outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, Quetta residents are grappling with **unannounced and prolonged power outages**, further worsening the situation. Many neighborhoods, including Satellite Town, Jinnah Road, Brewery Road, Sariab, and Pashtunabad, have reported extended load shedding, causing fans and water pumps to stop functioning. This has led to **acute water shortages** and **growing frustration among citizens**.

Medical experts have advised people to use electrolyte solutions, cold compresses, and wet cloths to mitigate heat-related illnesses.

The heat and power crisis have sparked **widespread protests** across Quetta. Residents took to the streets, burning tires and chanting slogans against WAPDA and the energy department. Protesters accused authorities of ignoring the crisis and demanded an **immediate end to load shedding**, alongside long-term solutions to the power shortage.

Power department officials attributed the load shedding to a **gap between supply and demand**, claiming efforts are underway to minimize public inconvenience. However, citizens rejected this explanation, citing a lack of improvement year after year.

Public voices are now urging the **Chief Minister of Balochistan**, the **Chief Secretary**, and federal authorities to intervene and ensure **immediate restoration of electricity**, providing much-needed relief during this intense heatwave.
