Warning for Android Users: Over 40% of Devices at Risk of Cyber Attacks, Google Issues Urgent Advisory

Islamabad — Google has issued a critical warning for Android users worldwide, revealing that nearly 40% of Android smartphones are now vulnerable to new cyber attacks. According to the tech giant, these devices are at increased risk of data theft through malware and spyware.

The company has released a new security update, but highlighted that phones running Android 12 or older will no longer receive modern security patches. Google emphasized that these outdated devices lack the capability to defend against emerging cyber threats.

Currently, only 58% of Android devices globally are covered under active security support, leaving over 40% of devices — affecting more than one billion users — exposed to digital risks.

Google’s latest report also outlined the distribution of Android versions as of December: Android 16 was present on 7.5% of devices, Android 15 on 19.3%, Android 14 on 17.9%, and Android 13 on 13.9%. These versions are particularly important because Android 12 and older will no longer receive security updates. Experts warn that users of these older systems face a higher risk to their personal data.

While Apple also faces challenges in migrating iPhone users to newer iOS versions, most devices update quickly, reducing the potential threat.

Cybersecurity experts advise that users whose devices cannot upgrade to Android 13 or later should seriously consider purchasing a new phone. They also recommend avoiding unknown apps and keeping security settings up to date.
