Rise in Lung Disease Linked to Pigeons Reported in Karachi, Women Most Affected: Pulmonologist

Karachi: A surge in cases of a lung disease linked to pigeons has been reported in Karachi, with women being the most affected, according to Dr. Muhammad Irfan, a pulmonologist. Speaking to a private TV channel, Dr. Irfan revealed that private hospitals are reporting 15 to 20 new cases of “Bird Fancier’s Lung” weekly.
The disease, caused by exposure to tiny particles from pigeons’ feathers and droppings, leads to allergic reactions and inflammation in the lungs. These particles can enter homes through windows and air conditioning systems, affecting residents, especially women, he noted.
Dr. Irfan warned that patients may require treatment with steroids, oxygen therapy, or even lung transplants in severe cases. He stressed the importance of avoiding contact with pigeons and taking necessary precautions to prevent the disease. People already experiencing symptoms are advised to distance themselves immediately from birds.
Meanwhile, officials at Civil Hospital Karachi stated that multiple cases of respiratory illnesses are being reported daily, although no specific classification system is currently in place. They also mentioned that unexplained shortness of breath in female patients has not yet been officially recorded.
