India Accused of Staging Another False Flag Operation in Pahalgam, Kashmir

Karachi: Pakistan has strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, a region in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, labeling it a false flag operation orchestrated by India. This is not the first time the term has been associated with incidents in India. Previous attacks, including the 2016 Pathankot attack, the 2019 Pulwama bombing, and assaults on foreign tourists in 2024, have also drawn similar allegations from Pakistan and even some Indian political voices and international observers.
The term “false flag” originated in naval warfare, where ships would fly the flag of a friendly or neutral nation to deceive enemies. Today, it is widely used in geopolitical, intelligence, and hybrid warfare contexts to describe covert operations where an attack is staged by a country or group but blamed on a rival to serve strategic goals.
According to analysts, such operations serve multiple purposes: deflecting attention from internal failures, manipulating public opinion, and creating justification for economic or military actions. The recent attack in Pahalgam, where terrorists reportedly confirmed victims’ religion before opening fire, has been seen as an attempt to inflame communal sentiment and promote the ruling BJP’s Hindutva agenda ahead of elections.
Pakistan argues that India uses these staged incidents to malign Pakistan internationally, suppress dissent in Kashmir, and rally domestic support through nationalism. Following the Pahalgam attack, India announced economic and water blockades against Pakistan, a move Islamabad sees as part of the false flag strategy.
Critics say the Indian media plays a complicit role in these operations by immediately blaming Pakistan without investigation, spreading misinformation, and stoking public anger—thus helping the false flag narrative gain traction. In contrast, Pakistan’s media has been praised for its responsible and balanced coverage.
The recurring accusations of false flag operations have begun to erode India’s credibility on the global stage, casting doubts over its intentions and damaging its efforts to build international trust.
The key question remains: Can India continue to achieve its strategic goals through false flag tactics, or is it risking long-term diplomatic isolation and loss of credibility?
