Strawberries Not Toxic, Experts Say: The Health Benefits and Precautions

Social media has recently been flooded with videos claiming that strawberries are toxic and can cause cancer, sparking widespread concern among consumers. Some even cited doctors recommending avoiding strawberries altogether. However, experts are now clarifying that these claims are unfounded, and strawberries remain a highly nutritious fruit with numerous health benefits.
Dr. Taj Naseeb Khan, Director of Crop Science Institute at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), explained that strawberries are an essential fruit with medicinal properties that have been studied extensively by researchers. He emphasized that despite the fruit’s susceptibility to fungal infections and pests, which leads farmers to use pesticides, this does not make strawberries inherently toxic.
“Strawberries are one of the most nutritious fruits, rich in vitamin C and antioxidants,” Dr. Khan said. “The concern arises from improper pesticide usage, which can affect human health. However, when consumed correctly, strawberries are very beneficial.”
Experts advise that before consuming strawberries, they should be thoroughly washed, preferably soaked in a saline solution for at least an hour to reduce pesticide residue. Dr. Muskan Khalil, a nutrition expert, emphasized that strawberries, when cleaned properly, offer numerous health benefits. “They are great for boosting immunity, lowering blood pressure, and regulating sugar levels, making them especially beneficial for people with diabetes.”
Research also indicates that regular consumption of strawberries can improve brain health and help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease due to their high anthocyanin content, which gives the fruit its red color. Additionally, studies suggest that strawberries can lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
In conclusion, while the use of excessive pesticides in strawberry farming is a concern, the fruit itself is not toxic. With proper cleaning, it remains a safe and health-boosting food option.
