Nokia Installs 4G Network on the Moon, But It Fails to Stay Operational

Finnish company Nokia has successfully installed a 4G cellular network on the moon, but the network was technically unable to stay operational. The 4G LTE system, developed by Nokia, was sent to the lunar surface through the IM-2 mission by the American private company, Intuitive Machines.

On March 6, the IM-2 mission landed on the Moon’s surface, and by March 7, the mission was officially declared a failure. According to the company, the network was initially activated but remained online for only 25 minutes before the power ran out.

This 4G system was designed to send HD videos, messages, and other data. Although the network lasted less than 30 minutes, the company claims that the network was successfully tested, as it received commands and transmitted data back to Intuitive Machines’ ground station.

“We installed the first cellular network on the Moon, and we are incredibly proud of the results we achieved despite the extremely challenging conditions,” the company stated. They added that if their device modules had been activated when their network’s power box was turned on, all indicators suggest that they would have been able to complete the first cellular call on the Moon.
