Cargo Ship Hit Near Strait of Hormuz, Crew Forced to Abandon Vessel
Tehran:A Liberia-flagged cargo ship was struck by an unidentified projectile near the coast of Oman, close to the Strait of Hormuz, forcing its crew to abandon the vessel. One crew member remains missing following the incident.
According to international media reports, the bulk carrier **Manoon Pioneer** was transiting the Strait of Hormuz when it came under attack. Maritime security sources said the vessel sustained severe damage, prompting crew members to jump overboard to escape.
British maritime risk management firm Vanguard reported that the unidentified projectile hit the ship’s engine room, triggering a fire that spread to the crew accommodation area. The crew initially attempted to extinguish the blaze but was ultimately forced to evacuate after failing to contain the fire.
The ship’s third engineer is reported missing, and search efforts are ongoing.
Following the attack, maritime security agencies operating in the region issued warnings to nearby vessels to exercise extreme caution. Rescue and search teams have also been dispatched to assist the damaged ship.
The incident comes amid a series of recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, raising concerns among global shipping companies and energy markets.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategic maritime chokepoints, handling nearly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any disruption in the waterway has the potential to significantly impact international trade and global energy prices.
