ICC Considering Major Changes to ODI World Cup Format, Report Says

Islamabad: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly considering significant changes to the format of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, including reducing the number of participating teams and introducing new tournament structures.
According to a report by the BBC, one proposal under discussion would reduce the number of teams in the ODI World Cup from 14 to 12. The report also suggests that a “Super Seven” stage could be introduced for the 2027 World Cup.
The proposed format changes could also result in more India-Pakistan matches during ICC tournaments, according to the report.
In addition, the ICC is reportedly evaluating the introduction of semi-finals in the World Test Championship (WTC) to make the competition more competitive and to encourage greater interest in Test cricket among mid-ranked teams.
The report further states that the ICC is reviewing the possibility of expanding the T20 World Cup’s “Super Eight” stage into a “Super Ten” format.
Meanwhile, plans are also being explored to launch a global club T20 tournament, similar to football’s Club World Cup.
The report added that, in the future, four-nation mini-tournaments could increasingly replace traditional bilateral cricket series as part of the international calendar.
