Masjid Al-Fath: The Historic Mosque Where the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) Prayed During the Battle of the Trench

Madinah: Masjid Al-Fath, located on the western slope of Mount Sila (Jabal Sila), is the largest and most prominent of the historic Seven Mosques (Masajid Al-Sab’a) in Madinah. Situated approximately 2.5 kilometers northwest of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the mosque holds great significance in Islamic history as a landmark associated with the Battle of the Trench (Battle of Al-Ahzab).
Historical Significance
During the Battle of the Trench in 5 AH, this area was close to the Muslim defensive line, while Mount Sila served as a natural protective barrier behind the Muslim forces.
According to authentic narrations, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) offered special supplications to Allah at this location during the battle. It is narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) that the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed here continuously for three days, and on Wednesday, Allah granted the Muslims victory over their opponents. Because of this historic event, the site became known as Masjid Al-Fath (The Mosque of Victory).
The Present Mosque
The mosque was rebuilt and expanded during the Saudi era and is now considerably larger than its original structure. It has an interior area of approximately 456 square meters and is admired for its simple yet elegant Islamic architectural style, attracting thousands of visitors and pilgrims every year.
Lessons from Masjid Al-Fath
Masjid Al-Fath serves as a timeless reminder that patience, perseverance, sincere prayer, and complete trust in Allah are the keys to overcoming hardship and achieving success. The Battle of the Trench remains a powerful example of faith, unity, and reliance on Allah’s help in times of adversity.
Supplication
O Allah, grant us steadfastness upon the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), strengthen our trust in You under all circumstances, bless us with sincerity in serving Your religion, and grant us the honor of visiting the blessed city of Madinah again and again with respect and devotion. Ameen.
