UN Climate Agency Warns Strong El Niño Could Drive Higher Global Temperatures Through 2027

GENEVA:The United Nations’ climate agency has warned that a strong **El Niño** weather pattern is expected to develop in the coming months, potentially driving higher global temperatures and affecting weather conditions across many parts of the world through **2027**.

According to the agency, the impacts of El Niño could be felt across multiple regions, increasing the likelihood of extreme heat, droughts, and other climate-related events.

The warning comes as Europe continues to experience the consequences of recent heatwaves.

In **France**, more than **2,025 deaths** have been recorded during the recent period of extreme heat. **Belgium** has reported around **1,200 deaths**, while the **Netherlands** has recorded approximately **480 fatalities**, bringing the combined total to **more than 3,700 deaths**. Authorities have warned that the death toll could continue to rise as assessments continue.

Spain has also been severely affected by the prolonged hot weather, with hundreds of heat-related deaths reported during the latest heatwave.

Climate experts have warned that the combination of a strengthening El Niño and long-term climate change could increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, underscoring the need for governments to strengthen public health measures and climate adaptation strategies.
