Simple Skin Test Can Help You Check for Dehydration in Seconds

ISLAMABAD: Water is essential for maintaining good health, and staying properly hydrated becomes even more important during hot weather when the risk of dehydration increases.
Thirst is the body’s natural signal that it needs more fluids to function properly. However, dehydration can sometimes develop before a person feels thirsty.
Dehydration occurs when the body does not have enough water to carry out its normal functions. Common symptoms include dark-colored urine, reduced urination, dry mouth, dry skin, fatigue, dizziness, and headaches.
Health experts say a simple skin elasticity test may help indicate whether the body is becoming dehydrated.
According to a study published in the Emergency Medicine Journal in 2007, dehydration can affect the texture and elasticity of the skin, making the test a useful screening tool in some situations.
To perform the test, gently pinch the skin on the back of your hand for a few seconds and then release it. If the skin immediately returns to its normal position, your body is likely well hydrated. However, if the skin takes longer than usual to return to its original shape, it may be a sign of dehydration.
Experts note that the skin pinch test should not be considered a definitive diagnosis, as skin elasticity naturally decreases with age. In older adults, the skin may take up to 20 seconds to return to its normal position even without significant dehydration. Nevertheless, if the skin remains tented for an unusually long time or is accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, or confusion, increasing fluid intake and seeking medical advice may be necessary.
Doctors recommend drinking adequate amounts of water throughout the day, especially during periods of extreme heat, physical activity, or illness, to help prevent dehydration and maintain overall health.
