Ishaq Dar Warns India Against Undermining Indus Waters Treaty

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has warned India against undermining international agreements, saying that any attempt to weaken or sabotage such treaties could have serious consequences.

Addressing an international seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty in Islamabad, Dar urged India to refrain from “sowing the seeds of war” and avoid actions that could threaten peace in South Asia.

He said violations of international law and treaty obligations have consequences that extend beyond the two countries directly involved and can undermine the broader international legal order.

Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s position that it would not accept any illegal encroachment on its legitimate water rights.

“If Pakistan is deprived of its water rights, it will have serious consequences,” he said, emphasizing that the country would safeguard its share of water resources under the treaty.

The deputy prime minister also stated that breaching international agreements damages the credibility of states and sets a dangerous precedent in international relations.

His remarks came amid continued tensions between Pakistan and India over issues related to the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty and regional security.
