Italy’s Meloni Seeks to Repair Relations With Trump After Public Dispute

ROME: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed a desire to restore normal relations with US President Donald Trump following a public exchange of criticism between the two leaders.
According to Reuters, speaking at an event in Rome, Meloni said she had no intention of prolonging the dispute that emerged last week and hoped relations between Italy and the United States would return to normal.
“I have no desire to continue this controversy,” the Italian prime minister said, signaling a willingness to move past the disagreement.
The tensions began after President Trump claimed during an interview with an Italian television channel that Meloni had asked to take a photograph with him during the recent G7 Summit in France.
Meloni quickly rejected the claim, describing it as completely unfounded. Responding to Trump’s remarks, she said she was surprised by the statement and questioned why the US president would treat allies in such a manner.
“The president’s comments are entirely fabricated,” Meloni said. “I am genuinely surprised. I do not know why the President of the United States treats his allies this way. This is not the first time.”
She further criticized what she described as a softer approach toward leaders who are considered adversaries of the West and the United States.
“It is disappointing that such determination is not shown toward the enemies of the West and America, whose leaders often receive far gentler treatment,” she added.
Meloni also emphasized Italy’s independence, stating that neither she nor Italy would ever “beg favors from anyone.”
Despite the sharp exchange of words, her latest remarks suggest an effort to ease tensions and preserve strong diplomatic ties between Rome and Washington, two long-standing NATO allies with close political, economic, and security cooperation.
