Supreme Judicial Council Disposes of 10 Complaints Against Judges

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, held a meeting in Islamabad and disposed of 10 complaints filed against judges, according to an official statement.

The council decided to introduce certain amendments to the judicial code of conduct and also reviewed draft rules intended to regulate the council’s procedures and operations. However, further consideration of the proposed rules was deferred to a later date.

According to the statement, in a notable demonstration of institutional accountability and transparency, the council reviewed complaints filed against some of its own members. Following the council’s reconstitution, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha A. Malik, Justice Aamer Farooq, and Justice Ali Baqar Najafi participated in the meeting as alternate members.

The council confirmed that a total of 10 complaints against judges were disposed of during the session.

Separately, a meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan was also held under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. The commission reviewed proposals for framing rules governing the interview process for judicial appointments.

The commission also examined the possibility of formulating rules for evaluating the performance of High Court judges.

According to the official statement, members discussed potential amendments to the Judicial Commission Rules 2024 concerning judicial appointments and deliberated on the procedure for nominating judges to constitutional benches in the High Courts.

The commission decided that all matters discussed during the meeting would be placed before its next session for further consideration.

The statement added that members of the Judicial Commission from the High Courts will also participate in the commission’s meeting scheduled for next week.
