A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday morning, prompting tsunami warnings across parts of Southeast Asia and raising concerns about widespread damage in coastal areas.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m. local time near Mindanao Island, according to initial reports.

Media reports said at least five people were killed and several buildings collapsed as a result of the strong tremor. Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and the number of casualties may rise as rescue operations continue.

Following the undersea earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued for several areas across the region. Authorities in the Philippines warned that tsunami waves of up to three meters could impact parts of the country’s coastline.

Tsunami alerts were also issued for northeastern coastal regions of Indonesia, while officials warned that waves of up to one meter could affect certain coastal areas of Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and local disaster management authorities urged residents in vulnerable coastal communities to move to higher ground and follow evacuation orders.

Emergency agencies have activated response measures, and authorities are closely monitoring sea levels and aftershock activity.
