Does Beef Cause Diabetes? New Study Reveals Surprising Findings

Karachi: Type 2 diabetes and high blood sugar are among the fastest-growing chronic health conditions worldwide, and red meat—especially beef—has often been linked to an increased risk of these diseases. However, a new medical study has challenged this perception with unexpected results.

According to research conducted by the Indiana University School of Public Health in the United States, daily consumption of beef does not appear to increase blood sugar levels, affect insulin function, or raise inflammation risk in the body. Researchers reported that no significant negative impact on metabolic health was observed from beef consumption.

For the study, experts conducted a clinical trial involving 24 participants aged between 18 and 74 years. All participants were overweight or obese and had elevated blood sugar levels, but were otherwise considered generally healthy.

During the experiment, participants followed two different dietary plans for 28 days each. In the first phase, they consumed around 100 grams of beef or chicken twice daily with meals. In the second phase, they completely avoided meat. Throughout the study, researchers closely monitored blood sugar levels, insulin sensitivity, and other metabolic indicators.

The findings showed no significant changes in blood glucose levels or insulin function due to beef consumption. Researchers also noted that the effects of beef and chicken on metabolic health were largely similar.

The research team acknowledged that the study duration was relatively short, but emphasized that dietary effects often begin to appear even within limited timeframes. The results have been published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use it, leading to dangerously high blood sugar levels. If left uncontrolled, it can cause serious damage to the heart, nerves, eyes, and other organs.
