PTA introduces major policy change, SIM ownership cannot be terminated for one year

Islamabad (Khabrain Report) The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a major change in SIM card policy by imposing a new restriction for mobile users across the country.
Under the new policy, an active SIM card can no longer be terminated or transferred from the owner’s name for one year after issuance.
According to PTA, SIM cards could previously be disowned after 60 days, but the duration has now been extended to 365 days. The authority said the move aims to discourage frequent disposal or transfer of SIMs and further strengthen digital security.
PTA stated that once a new SIM is issued in a citizen’s name, it will remain registered under that individual for one year, and ownership cannot be changed during this period.
The authority once again advised citizens to remain cautious during biometric verification and avoid issuing SIM cards on their CNIC for unrelated individuals.
PTA also urged mobile users to renew their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) before expiry, warning that SIMs registered against expired, cancelled, or deceased persons’ CNICs are being blocked.
According to the authority, the policy is intended to ensure secure mobile communication, prevent the misuse of fake SIMs, and protect citizens’ personal data.
