Protecting Markhor Means Preserving Our Natural Heritage, Says Balochistan Chief Minister

Quetta (Qudrat Daily) — Mir Sarfraz Bugti said on the occasion of International Markhor Day that the day was being observed globally to highlight the ecological and cultural importance of the markhor, Pakistan’s national animal.

He noted that under a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly, International Markhor Day is observed every year on May 24, while the day was officially celebrated for the first time in 2024.

The chief minister said the markhor, scientifically known as Markhor, is a rare and significant wild species found in the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia, particularly in Pakistan.

He stated that Balochistan was proud to host important habitats for rare wildlife species and that the provincial government remained committed to the protection and survival of endangered animals.

Mir Sarfraz Bugti said the major threats facing the markhor included habitat destruction, illegal hunting, and the growing impacts of climate change, adding that collective efforts were needed to address these challenges.

He further said that protecting the markhor and its natural habitat was not only an environmental responsibility but also an opportunity to strengthen regional conservation efforts, promote sustainable tourism, and support the economic development of local communities.

The chief minister appreciated the efforts of wildlife experts, environmental organizations, local communities, and the United Nations for raising awareness about biodiversity conservation and the protection of rare wildlife species.

He emphasized that protecting the markhor was synonymous with preserving the country’s natural heritage and ecological balance, adding that collective action was essential for ensuring a safe and sustainable future for wildlife and humanity alike.
