Police station set up at Federal Urdu University in Karachi, raising concerns among students

KARACHI: A police station has been established at the Science Campus of Federal Urdu University in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, as the Aziz Bhatti Police Station is being relocated to the premises of the university’s BSc block area.

According to sources, the relocation process is currently underway, with parts of the investigation wing already shifted to the new location. Preparations are also being made for the office of the Station House Officer (SHO).

Sources further said that formal approval for the relocation was obtained from the university administration, which has granted permission for six months. The new site has been allocated behind the academic block of the university.

Police sources confirmed that several offices have already been moved to the university campus, and the SHO of Aziz Bhatti Police Station is expected to begin operating from the campus in the coming days. Public interaction at the newly established police station has also reportedly begun.

It is further reported that police operations, including the transfer of detainees, have started, with access through the same gate used by students and faculty members visiting the examination department.

The development has reportedly caused concern among students, particularly female students, while faculty members have also expressed surprise over the decision. A police mobile van is currently stationed at the campus on a permanent basis.

However, the university registrar stated that he was not aware of the formal relocation decision. “I do not recall signing any approval for this arrangement. The campus officer may have better knowledge, possibly with approval from the Vice Chancellor. A police station should not be established inside the university,” he said.
