Pressure Mounts on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer After Labour’s Heavy Election Losses

LONDON: Pressure is mounting on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer following Labour Party’s poor performance in recent local elections across England.

According to British media reports, several senior Labour Party members, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, have urged Starmer to announce a timeline for stepping down from office. Reports claim that more than 70 Labour lawmakers are now backing calls for a leadership change within the party.

Under Labour Party rules, support from 81 Members of Parliament is required to formally trigger a leadership contest for the selection of a new party leader.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy reportedly advised Starmer to prepare a structured transition of power amid growing political unrest inside the party.

The calls for resignation intensified after Labour suffered major losses in England’s local elections, where the ruling party reportedly lost more than 1,300 council seats.

Despite mounting criticism, Starmer has insisted he will prove his opponents wrong. He admitted that his government had made some mistakes but defended his administration’s key political decisions as being in the country’s best interest.
