Heavy Rainfall Forecast in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Raises Risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods

Peshawar: A new western weather system is expected to enter the upper regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today, bringing forecasts of heavy rainfall and strong winds across several districts.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), there is a heightened risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) due to the expected weather conditions. An official alert has been issued to the relevant district administrations.
The upper districts of Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Swat District, Upper Dir, Kohistan Upper, and Mansehra District are particularly vulnerable, where glacial lakes and surrounding areas may face overflow risks leading to flash floods and landslides.
The PDMA has directed district authorities to continuously monitor sensitive glacial sites and ensure that early warning systems remain fully operational. Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement near rivers, streams, and waterways.
People living in low-lying areas have been instructed to remain alert and move to safer locations if required. Authorities have also been asked to conduct emergency drills, activate evacuation centers, and ensure the availability of rescue teams.
The advisory further warns the public to immediately relocate to safe areas in case of sudden changes in water flow, unusual sounds of rocks or mud movement, or signs of instability in mountainous regions. Livestock and essential belongings should also be shifted to higher and safer ground.
Relevant departments including the National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and Communication & Works (C&W) have been instructed to take precautionary measures against possible road blockages.
The PDMA Emergency Operations Center remains fully active, and citizens have been urged to contact helpline 1700 in case of any emergency.
