May 2026 Set to Bring Record Holidays for Government Employees and Students in Pakistan

Islamabad: May 2026 is expected to become an unusually holiday-heavy month in Pakistan, offering government employees and students an extended series of breaks, with estimates suggesting anywhere between 11 to 19 days of holidays depending on workplace policies.
According to reports, the month will feature multiple long weekends due to the regular weekly schedule, Labour Day on May 1, and the possible timing of Eid-ul-Adha, making it one of the most relaxed working months of the year.
Officials said that due to ongoing government austerity measures and energy-saving policies, many institutions already observe a reduced working week, including arrangements such as Work-from-Home on Fridays in some departments. In such cases, combining weekends and official holidays could result in up to 19 non-working days, while standard offices may still see around 11 holidays in total.
The month is expected to begin with a long weekend as May 1 (Friday) marks Labour Day, followed by Saturday and Sunday, creating a three-day break. Similar patterns are expected in the weeks of May 8–10, May 15–17, and May 22–24, each forming extended weekends for citizens.
The biggest uncertainty remains Eid-ul-Adha, the final dates of which will be confirmed after the moon sighting meeting scheduled for May 17. If the Dhul Hijjah moon is sighted on that date, Eid is expected to fall between May 27 and May 29 (Wednesday to Friday), potentially creating a five-day holiday period when combined with the weekend.
If the month extends to 30 days, Eid holidays could shift to May 28–30, followed by Sunday on May 31. There is also speculation that an additional public holiday on May 25 could further extend the break, potentially giving citizens an uninterrupted week off.
Educational institutions have already announced Friday-to-Sunday weekly holidays in several cases, while some government offices are operating under flexible arrangements, further reducing the effective working days.
The public is reportedly welcoming the development, viewing it as an opportunity for family time, travel, and leisure activities. Overall, May 2026 is shaping up to be a month where rest and recreation significantly outweigh routine work schedules across the country.
