EU Signals Possible Easing of Iran Sanctions if Agreement Reached

Brussels — The European Union has indicated that it may consider easing economic sanctions on Iran if progress is made toward a negotiated agreement.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that sanctions imposed on Iran could be relaxed if Tehran demonstrates willingness to reach a compromise and engage constructively in diplomacy.
According to reports from an EU meeting, no member state opposed the idea of reviewing or easing sanctions, suggesting a possible shift in the bloc’s approach depending on future negotiations.
The development comes amid broader international diplomatic activity involving Iran and Western powers, with discussions focused on reducing regional tensions and reviving dialogue.
In a separate statement, Chancellor Merz also addressed Ukraine’s European integration process, stating that immediate membership of the European Union is not possible for Ukraine. However, he confirmed that a structured pathway for eventual accession has been proposed, outlining gradual steps toward alignment with EU standards.
The remarks highlight ongoing strategic debates within the EU regarding both Eastern European enlargement and relations with Iran, as the bloc balances security concerns with diplomatic engagement.
