Saudi Arabia Imposes Strict Penalties on Unlicensed Food Production for Hajj

Saudi Arabia has introduced stringent regulations governing the food and pharmaceutical sectors, prohibiting the production or storage of food items intended for pilgrims without official legal licenses.

Under the new directives, violators could face fines of up to 10 million riyals or imprisonment of up to 10 years. Additional penalties include suspension from food-related activities for up to 180 days, revocation of licenses, or suspension of operations for more than one year.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority, which oversees food and drug safety in the Kingdom, emphasized that all food factories and warehouses must comply with the Food System law and its executive regulations. Facilities are strictly prohibited from producing or storing food without obtaining the necessary legal permits.

The authority stressed that ensuring the safety of food and medicines for pilgrims during Hajj remains a top priority. It warned that no leniency would be shown to those violating the regulations.

Businesses were also instructed not to store products outside licensed facilities and to fully meet legal requirements before resuming operations if shut down. The authority highlighted that strict compliance with these regulations will enhance overall food safety and protect public health.

Citizens have been encouraged to report any violations, as authorities seek to maintain high safety standards during the pilgrimage season.
