Cargo Ship Struck by Unknown Projectile Near Oman in Strait of Hormuz
A cargo vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile near the Omani coast in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the incident.
According to AFP, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in a statement that the affected vessel reported being hit by an “unknown projectile.”
The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles (about 37 kilometers) northeast of Khasab, Oman, a strategically important area near the Strait of Hormuz.
The UKMTO did not disclose the name of the vessel and did not immediately provide details on the extent of the damage or whether there were any casualties.
In its statement, the British maritime monitoring agency said the relevant authorities are investigating the incident to determine the nature of the attack, identify the type of projectile used, and establish who may be responsible.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding Gulf waters, where a series of maritime incidents and rising military tensions in recent weeks have kept international shipping under close watch.
Security analysts note that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a significant share of global oil and natural gas supplies passes.
