Sindh High Court Raises Concerns Over Milk Quality, Pricing and Adulteration in Karachi

Karachi: The Sindh High Court has made strong remarks during the hearing of a petition related to milk pricing, retailer profit margins, and alleged adulteration in Karachi.
During the proceedings, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that the Commissioner Karachi has the authority to fix milk prices, stating that if the government fails to set appropriate rates, shopkeepers may be forced into adulteration.
The lawyer also requested the court to restrain authorities from sealing shops or taking action against retailers until a formal response is submitted, claiming that cleanliness-related issues are being used as a pretext for closures.
In response, the court questioned whether the lawyer had ever personally consumed milk purchased from shops. The bench remarked that milk sold in the market often causes throat irritation, while buffalo milk shows a noticeable difference in quality, adding that adulteration is already prevalent in Karachi’s milk supply.
The petitioner’s counsel argued that boiling milk can help detect adulteration, to which the court remarked that it can also be identified by smell.
The court adjourned the hearing of the case until May 5 for further proceedings.
