Imran Khan’s Son Raises Issue at UN, Khawaja Asif Responds Sharply

Islamabad: A fresh political debate has emerged after Qasim Khan, son of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council, calling for the release of his father and other political prisoners in Pakistan.

Speaking before representatives of 47 member states in Geneva, Qasim Khan urged authorities to ensure the implementation of international human rights commitments. In a statement shared on X, he expressed support for Pakistan’s GSP+ Status, emphasizing that citizens should not suffer due to the actions of political leadership. However, he stressed that the government must comply with 27 international conventions, including those related to human rights and prevention of torture.

Khawaja Asif’s Strong Reaction
Responding to the remarks, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticized Qasim Khan’s move, questioning why he does not come to Pakistan if he is genuinely concerned about his father. He remarked that instead of raising such issues on international platforms, Qasim should demonstrate his concern by visiting and meeting Imran Khan.

Importance of GSP+
Pakistan has been benefiting from the European Union’s GSP+ scheme since 2014, which provides duty-free access to European markets and is considered vital for the country’s exports and economy. However, continuation of the status depends on strict compliance with international conventions on human rights, media freedom, and minority protection.

Political analysts believe Qasim Khan’s speech at an আন্তর্জাতিক forum could increase diplomatic pressure on the government, while officials view it as an attempt to lobby against Pakistan. The issue has also sparked mixed reactions on social media, reflecting deep political divisions among the public.
