Apple Tightens Security Bug Reporting Process Amid Surge of AI-Generated False Reports

Islamabad: Technology giant Apple has introduced significant changes to its software vulnerability reporting process after a sharp increase in low-quality, AI-generated security reports placed additional pressure on its cybersecurity teams.

According to the company, many submissions contained inaccurate or unverified information, forcing security experts to spend considerable time reviewing reports that did not identify genuine software vulnerabilities. As a result, Apple has decided to tighten the reporting process to improve efficiency and focus on legitimate security issues.

Surge in AI-Generated Reports

According to a report by a British newspaper, Apple implemented the changes in June 2026 after its security review system experienced an unusually high volume of submissions. A large proportion of these reports had been generated using artificial intelligence, requiring extensive time and resources to evaluate.

Apple said many of the AI-generated reports flagged security risks that did not actually exist, diverting attention from genuine vulnerabilities that required immediate action.

Industry-Wide Challenge

The company noted that the issue is not unique to Apple but is affecting the broader technology industry as the use of generative AI continues to grow. While AI has made it easier to identify potential software flaws, it has also enabled inexperienced users to submit a growing number of inaccurate or poorly verified reports.

AI Changing Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity experts say artificial intelligence has significantly accelerated the process of identifying potential software vulnerabilities. However, they caution that AI tools can also produce false positives, making it necessary for companies to manually verify each reported issue before taking action.

Startup Claims AI-Assisted Discoveries

The report also cited Italian cybersecurity startup Bynario, which claimed it used OpenAI’s ChatGPT to identify more than 50 potential security vulnerabilities in the latest version of Apple’s macOS within three weeks. However, it noted that these findings have not all been independently verified.

Balancing Speed and Accuracy

Experts say AI is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in cybersecurity, but its outputs should not be accepted without verification. As a result, major technology companies are introducing stricter review systems to prioritize high-quality security reports while reducing the burden caused by inaccurate or unnecessary submissions.
