MQM-P Reacts Strongly to Proposed Change of Sindh Governor, Hints at Leaving Federal Government

Karachi: Muttahida Qaumi Movement – Pakistan (MQM-P) has expressed strong reservations over the federal government’s reported decision to replace the Governor of Sindh, saying the party was not taken into confidence and warning it may reconsider its alliance with the government.
According to media reports, an MQM-P spokesperson said the party learned about the proposed change of governor through the media rather than through official consultation with the federal government. The spokesperson added that the party leadership would soon decide its course of action regarding the issue.
Meanwhile, senior MQM-P leader and Member of the National Assembly Farooq Sattar said the party was being deprived of its constitutional right to the governorship of Sindh. He noted that MQM-P is currently an ally of Pakistan مسلم لیگ (ن) (PML-N) in the federal government and that traditionally the governor of Sindh has belonged to MQM-P.
Sattar criticized what he described as unilateral decisions regarding the change of governor despite the norms of coalition politics. He warned that if such decisions continue, there would be little justification for MQM-P to remain part of the federal government.
His remarks have triggered fresh debate in political circles about the future of coalition politics and the possible impact of the governor’s replacement.
The federal government has reportedly decided to replace Kamran Tessori with senior PML-N leader Nihal Hashmi. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif has forwarded the summary for approval to the President of Pakistan.
