Gas Leak Explosion in Karachi Kills 13, Including Women and Children

KARACHI: At least 13 people were killed and more than 10 others injured after a gas leak triggered an explosion in a residential building in Karachi early Thursday morning, police and rescue officials said.

According to police, the explosion occurred around 4:00 a.m. in the Soldier Bazaar area, causing a portion of the three-storey building to collapse. Law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area immediately after the incident, while rescue teams launched a search and recovery operation.

Rescue officials stated that the building had three floors with a single room on each level. Narrow streets in the neighborhood have made rescue efforts difficult.

Authorities confirmed that 13 bodies have been recovered so far, including four children and three women. More than 10 injured individuals have been shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Brigadier Wajid, Director General of Rescue 1122, told Geo News that the explosion took place on the first floor of the building. He said the blast was likely caused by a gas cylinder or a gas suction machine.

He added that more people may still be trapped under the rubble, and rescue operations are ongoing. Specialized equipment is being used to cut through iron structures and remove debris as teams continue their search.
