Ex-ISI DG Faiz Hameed Not Testifying Against Imran Khan, Lawyer Clarifies

Islamabad: The lawyer of former DG ISI, Faiz Hameed, has clarified that his client will not act as a government witness in any cases against former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan.

Barrister Mian Ali Ashfaq rejected reports suggesting that Faiz Hameed might testify against Imran Khan, calling such claims “speculative and baseless.” Responding to questions from The News, he emphasized that there is “no truth” to circulating media and political reports alleging that Faiz Hameed is considering serving as a government witness in cases against the former prime minister.

The clarification comes amid recurring claims by certain federal ministers and well-connected political figures, including Senator Faisal Vawda, who have repeatedly suggested that the former ISI chief would testify against Imran Khan. Speculation has also circulated regarding a supposed collusion between Faiz Hameed and Imran Khan, particularly in the context of the violent events of May 9, 2023, following Khan’s arrest and subsequent attacks on some military installations.

When asked whether he had personally discussed the matter with his client, Barrister Ashfaq did not give a direct confirmation but stated, “I know this to be true,” reinforcing the position that Faiz Hameed is not a government witness against the PTI leader.

These speculations intensified after a military court sentenced Faiz Hameed to 14 years in prison. Senior federal cabinet members, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Information Minister Atta Ullah Tarar, have previously claimed that the violent incidents of May 9 were part of a coordinated plan involving Imran Khan and the former ISI chief. Despite these claims, the ISPR has not confirmed any collusion between Imran Khan and Faiz Hameed in its briefings.

Notably, when government spokespersons were asked by The News whether these claims were based on civil or military investigations or mere conjecture, they refrained from providing a direct answer and directed inquiries to the ISPR.
