Karachi: Photos of Town Chairman Displayed on Open Manholes in Gulshan-e-Iqbal

KARACHI: A public campaign has been launched against the Town Chairman of Gulshan-e-Iqbal after the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy, Ibrahim, who fell into an open manhole in the city’s NIPA area.
As part of this campaign, residents have put up the Town Chairman’s photos on every open manhole and garbage dump across various parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The displayed posters bear bold captions such as *“From the Residents,” “Missing Person,”* and *“Spend Public Money on the Public.”*
The campaign reflects growing anger among locals after the Town Chairman distanced himself from the responsibility of covering the manholes. His remarks have drawn widespread criticism from the community.
Last week, Ibrahim had stepped onto a manhole near a departmental store at NIPA Chowrangi. The manhole, lacking a proper lid, had been temporarily covered with cardboard. The cardboard collapsed under the child’s weight, causing him to fall into the manhole. His body was recovered 15 hours later from a drain located one kilometer away.
The incident has sparked intense public outrage, with residents demanding accountability and immediate action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
