Father of Child Who Died in Open Manhole in Karachi Vows to Cover Unsecured Drains After Government Fails to Act

Karachi: The father of three-year-old Ibrahim, who tragically died after falling into an open manhole near Nipa Chowrangi, has expressed deep frustration with the government’s inaction and vowed to personally ensure uncovered drains are secured.

Speaking to international media, Ibrahim’s father tearfully said, “Who do I turn to? My child is gone. Who will take action against this? If anyone was responsible, they would have been here.” He added that his son remained in water for 14 to 15 hours before being recovered and no one came to rescue him.

“I will tell the government: if you cannot put covers on the drains, I will start doing it myself to prevent another child from dying,” he said, urging citizens to contact him if they notice open drains near their homes. He also stated that he plans to cover open drains in front of all departmental stores that lack proper safety measures.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, where Ibrahim’s body was recovered about a kilometer away from the open manhole, 14 hours after the accident. According to reports, 24 citizens, including five children, have died this year in Karachi after falling into open drains and manholes.
