Senate Passes 27th Constitutional Amendment: Field Marshal Granted Lifetime Privileges and Legal Immunity

*Islamabad (Qudrat News)* — The **Senate of Pakistan** has approved the **27th Constitutional Amendment**, introducing key changes to **Article 243 (clauses 4 and 7)** of the Constitution, effectively redefining the structure and hierarchy of the country’s defense leadership.
According to **Express News**, under the new amendment, the title of the **Chief of Army Staff (COAS)** has been officially changed to **Commander of the Defence Forces**. The **President of Pakistan**, on the advice of the **Prime Minister**, will appoint the **Commander of the Defence Forces**, similar to the appointments of the **Air Chief** and **Naval Chief**.
The amendment further stipulates that the position of the **Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee** will be **abolished from November 27, 2025**.
Additionally, the **Prime Minister**, upon the recommendation of the Army Chief, will appoint the **Commander of the National Strategic Command** from among the officers of the Pakistan Army, whose salary and allowances will be determined by the government.
A significant addition in the amendment grants the **federal government** the authority to promote military officers to the ranks of **Field Marshal**, **Air Marshal**, or **Admiral-in-Chief**. Once promoted, these officers will **retain their uniforms, ranks, and privileges for life**, and will be **recognized as national heroes**.
The amendment also provides that these high-ranking officers **cannot be removed from their positions except through Article 47**, and the **Field Marshal** will enjoy **legal immunity under Article 248** of the Constitution.
Furthermore, the **federal government** will define the **duties and responsibilities** of the Field Marshal, Air Marshal, and Admiral-in-Chief, marking a historic restructuring of Pakistan’s military command framework.
