German Nurse Sentenced to Life for Killing 10 Patients to Ease Workload
Berlin: A palliative care nurse in Germany has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 10 patients and attempted murder of 27 others.
According to foreign news reports, the prosecution told the court that the nurse administered excessive doses of sedatives and pain-relieving medications, primarily to elderly patients, to reduce her workload during night shifts.
The horrific incidents occurred between December 2023 and May 2024 at a hospital in Würselen, western Germany. Investigations revealed that the nurse had completed her training in 2007 and had been working at the same hospital since 2020. The prosecution stated that she displayed irritation toward patients requiring extra care and harbored a desire to “play god” over life and death.
Court proceedings indicated that during night shifts, she deliberately gave patients excessive medication to make them sleep or become unconscious, thereby easing her work responsibilities.
The nurse was arrested in 2024 and retains the right to appeal the verdict. Authorities have confirmed that investigations into additional suspicious deaths are ongoing, and exhumations of several graves have begun to identify potential further victims.
