Love Burgers and Pizza? Even a Few Days of Junk Food Can Harm Your Brain, Study Warns

Islamabad: If you’re a fan of burgers, pizza, and other junk foods, it may be time to cut back — even a few days of indulgence can damage your brain, according to new research.

A recent **study by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine (USA)** has found that consuming high-fat, processed foods for just a few days can negatively affect brain function, particularly memory.

Researchers discovered that diets rich in fat and processed ingredients quickly alter the brain’s memory system, increasing the risk of memory impairment. In experiments on mice, scientists provided high-fat diets and observed **significant negative effects on brain cells within just four days**.

According to the researchers, while it’s well known that diet and metabolism affect brain health, it was surprising to see how quickly specific neurons became weak under the influence of junk food. The affected brain cells began changing their activity so rapidly that **memory performance was compromised almost immediately**.

The study concluded that **fat-rich fast foods can harm the brain long before physical effects like weight gain or diabetes appear.** The memory system, in particular, was found to be highly sensitive to dietary imbalance — highlighting the importance of maintaining a **balanced, nutrient-rich diet** for optimal brain health.

Experts warned that frequent consumption of high-fat junk food can not only impair memory but also increase the long-term risk of **Alzheimer’s disease and dementia**.

A similar study conducted in **May 2025 by McMaster University, Canada**, linked junk food consumption to **obesity, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and abdominal fat**. That study, based on data from over 6,000 Canadian adults, found that individuals who consumed ultra-processed foods tended to eat very few fruits and vegetables, resulting in higher rates of **insulin resistance, body fat, and cardiovascular problems**.

Researchers emphasized that ultra-processed foods contribute not only to obesity and type 2 diabetes but also to **heart disease, high cholesterol, and chronic inflammation** — making dietary moderation crucial for both physical and mental well-being.
