Father and Daughter Swept Away in Flash Floods in Rawalpindi Housing Society

Rawalpindi: A father and his 25-year-old daughter were swept away by a seasonal stream while in their car in a private housing society’s Phase 5. A video capturing the incident showed the two calling out for help as the vehicle was carried away by the rapid flow of water.
The tragic event occurred amidst heavy rainfall in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Since Monday afternoon, intermittent rain has caused low-lying areas to become flooded. Rawalpindi received the heaviest rainfall, with Kachehri Chaklala recording 83 mm, followed by Syedpur Islamabad at 74 mm, Golra at 28 mm, Bokra at 63 mm, PMD at 32 mm, Shamsabad at 32 mm, Pirwadhai at 30 mm, Gwalmandi at 53 mm, and New Katarian at 24 mm.
The water level in Nullah Lai at Katarian reached 9 feet, and at Gwalmandi, it stood at 5 feet. As the rain subsided, teams from WASA (Water and Sanitation Agency) began draining the floodwaters from the affected areas.
According to reports, the father-daughter duo was attempting to drive their car near the seasonal stream in the housing society when the vehicle became stranded. The water flow became increasingly strong, and the car, along with the passengers, was swept away. The two were seen in the video calling for help, but despite attempts to rescue them, they were taken by the water.
The father has been identified as retired Colonel Ishaq Qazi. Rescue operations are currently underway, involving rescue teams and divers, to locate and recover the victims. Emergency services from Rescue 1122 are at the site, with the search still ongoing.
In a separate incident, a child fell into a seasonal stream in the Christian Colony area of Rawalpindi’s Khanna Police jurisdiction. The search is ongoing for 8-year-old Anadiya, who was swept away by the floods.
Additionally, a young man named Hamid, aged 17 to 18, was reported to have fallen into a stream in the Hamk area near Burji Stop in Islamabad. Rescue teams and local police are actively searching for him as well.
The local authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious as more heavy rain is expected in the coming days.
