PIA’s 1962 Supersonic Legacy: World’s Fastest Commercial Flight Still Unbroken After 63 Years

Karachi:Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), once a symbol of innovation and excellence in global aviation, still holds an extraordinary world record that has stood unmatched for over six decades. In **1962**, the national carrier operated the **world’s fastest commercial flight** from **London Heathrow to Karachi**, completing the journey in just **6 hours, 43 minutes, and 51 seconds**.
Commanded by **Captain Abdullah Baig**, the Boeing 720 jet cruised at an average speed of **938 km/h**, an achievement that remains a proud yet often forgotten chapter in global aviation history. This flight not only showcased Pakistan’s technical prowess but also marked the airline’s confident emergence on the international stage.
PIA was also **Asia’s first airline to induct jet aircraft** and has many other firsts to its name:
* In **1964**, it became the **first non-Communist airline to fly to China**.
* In **1985**, PIA provided **technical and operational support to Emirates** during its launch.
* In **2005**, it completed a **record-breaking nonstop flight from Hong Kong to London**.
* It was also a **pioneer in South Asia** for offering **in-flight entertainment systems**.
Despite such historic highs, PIA’s more recent years have been marked by challenges. In **2020**, revelations regarding **pilot license fraud** and failure in international **safety audits** led to **flight bans in the EU, UK, and USA**—blows from which the airline is still struggling to recover.
Currently, PIA’s fleet comprises **32 aircraft**, primarily **Airbus A320s** and **Boeing 777s**, with operational hubs in **Karachi**, **Lahore**, and **Islamabad**.
While PIA’s past continues to inspire, its future hinges on structural reforms, international trust-building, and a renewed commitment to safety and service excellence.
