Asthma: A Chronic Disease That Cannot Be Fully Cured, Experts Say

Islamabad: Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that cannot be completely cured, according to medical experts. While long-term management can control the symptoms, the underlying condition often remains with the patient for life.
The primary reasons why asthma cannot be fully eradicated are outlined below:
Persistent Sensitivity of Air Passages
In asthma, the airways in the lungs remain permanently sensitive. This sensitivity can persist for years, causing swelling and constriction whenever exposed to triggers such as dust, smoke, or cold air.
Genetic Factors
Asthma is often hereditary. If someone in the family has asthma, there is an increased likelihood that other family members may also develop the condition. Genetic diseases are usually chronic and are managed rather than cured.
Environmental Factors
Pollutants like smoke, pollen, cold air, pet dander, chemicals, smog, germs, and dust particles can trigger asthma attacks. These factors are constantly present in the environment, making it difficult to completely eliminate asthma.
Immune System Dysregulation
Asthma is essentially an immune system disorder where the body overreacts to triggers that would not normally affect a healthy person. This excessive response leads to inflammation and difficulty in breathing.
Temporary Effects of Medications
Asthma medications, such as inhalers or corticosteroids, help control symptoms temporarily, but they do not cure the disease. Symptoms often return once the medication is stopped.
Changes in Physical Structure of the Lungs
Prolonged asthma can lead to permanent changes in the airways of the lungs. Once these changes occur, it is not possible to fully restore the airways to their normal condition.
Health experts advise those with asthma to follow long-term treatment plans and avoid known triggers to manage the disease effectively. However, as it remains a chronic condition, patients must accept that asthma is not something that can be entirely cured.
