Imran Khan’s Legal Battles Intensify as Court Hears Bail Requests in May 9 Riots Cases

Lahore – The legal proceedings surrounding Imran Khan, the former Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), continue to unfold with increasing complexity. In a crucial hearing at the Lahore High Court, the court addressed the bail applications for Khan in connection with eight separate cases related to the violent May 9 riots.
Barrister Salman Safdar, Khan’s lawyer, presented compelling arguments stating that there were no direct evidence or witness testimonies linking Khan to the violent incidents. According to Safdar, the First Information Reports (FIRs) failed to mention any specific role played by Khan, and no evidence has been produced to substantiate the allegations of a conspiracy.
“Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, has been in jail for over two years, and it is clear from the legal precedent set in the case of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf that if a person is arrested in one case, they are presumed to be arrested in all associated cases,” said Barrister Safdar. He added that Khan had already been granted bail in 21 other similar cases.
Furthermore, Safdar questioned the prosecution’s reliance on pre-arrest statements and argued that no forensic tests, including voice matching or photogrammetric tests, were carried out on Khan despite his refusal to undergo such tests. He emphasized that this lack of investigation undermines the credibility of the case.

The prosecutor, however, contended that Khan’s refusal to cooperate with the investigation had hampered the progress of the cases. They suggested that the trial court should reconsider the applications for bail, given the new circumstances surrounding the case.
In a striking development, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had previously declared Khan’s arrest on May 9 as illegal, ordering his immediate release on May 11. This judgment cast further doubt on the legal grounds for his detention and ignited debates regarding the legality of the charges against him.
The eight cases in question are all being pursued by the police, but none of the FIRs contain specific details regarding a conspiracy, as pointed out by Khan’s legal team. Khan’s defense further asserts that there is no tangible proof linking him to any criminal activity during the riots.
The Lahore High Court’s ruling on the bail applications is anticipated to have significant implications for Khan’s ongoing legal battles. With a growing number of cases and legal challenges, it remains to be seen whether Khan’s freedom will be restored or if he will face continued detention.
As the case continues, it is clear that legal experts and political analysts alike will be closely monitoring the developments in this high-profile case, which has garnered significant attention both nationally and internationally.
