Solar Energy Boom in Pakistan: Country Becomes World’s 3rd Largest Importer of Solar Panels

Karachi:Amid an ongoing energy crisis and soaring electricity prices, Pakistanis are turning to solar power in record numbers, propelling the country to become the **third-largest importer of solar panels in the world**, according to a report by *Aaj News*.
Importers say between **2,000 to 2,500 containers of solar panels** are arriving at Pakistani ports every month, reflecting the surge in demand. This boom has not only provided relief to the public but also brought a windfall for traders and importers.
Karachi resident **Kashif Haider**, 45, shared that his rooftop solar system powers his air conditioner and even his electric iron. “After installing solar panels, my electricity bills are nearly zero, and I don’t suffer from load shedding anymore,” he said.
Market trends show that **Chinese, German, and other international brands** of solar panels are widely available. Prices have plummeted from **Rs. 110 per watt to just Rs. 27 per watt**, making solar energy more accessible than ever. According to retailer **Ismail**, sales have increased dramatically in the past year.
Solar importer **Shabbir Mansha** revealed that Pakistan imported **17 gigawatts** worth of solar panels just last year, earning the country the third spot globally in solar imports.
**Experts in the energy sector** attribute this growth to two key factors:
* **Stabilization of the U.S. dollar** in the Pakistani market
* **Decline in global solar panel prices**
Both factors have contributed to lower local prices and accelerated adoption across urban and rural areas alike.
Pakistan’s solar surge marks a significant shift in its energy landscape, as more households and businesses seek independence from an unreliable and expensive electricity grid.
