Security Measures Strengthened After Jaffer Express Attack, New Initiatives for Passenger Safety

Quetta:On **March 11**, a tragic incident unfolded when the **Jaffer Express** derailed near **Panier and Mashkaf stations**, following a **bomb blast** on the tracks. The train, which was carrying **380 passengers**, came to a halt around **1 PM**, and **terrorists** took control, holding the passengers hostage.
The **law enforcement agencies** launched a **rescue operation** on the evening of **March 12**, successfully freeing **190 passengers**. The operation resulted in the killing of **33 terrorists**, while **26 passengers** were **martyred** and **50 others** sustained injuries during the attack.
In the aftermath of this tragic event, the government has taken a series of security measures to ensure the safety of passengers. These measures include a significant increase in security personnel at **Quetta Railway Station**, with additional forces from the **Railway Police** and **FC** (Frontier Corps) deployed.
**Jaffer Express** and **Bolan Express**, which run between **Quetta and Jacobabad**, have seen a **threefold increase** in the number of security personnel. **FC** has been stationed at various railway stations throughout **Quetta Division**, and check posts have been established in mountainous areas to improve surveillance.
As part of these new measures, a **pilot engine** now runs ahead of the **Jaffer Express** daily, ensuring that the path is cleared for the train’s safe passage. In addition to this, security for both the **Jaffer Express** and **Bolan Express** has been ramped up, with the **Pakistani Army** deploying a **captain**, **second lieutenant**, and **20 FC vehicles** for security duties. The **Balochistan Levies** has also deployed **10 personnel** to safeguard the **Jaffer Express**.
The **Pakistan Railway Police** has increased its presence at key stations, with **50 police officers** now stationed at various locations throughout **Quetta Division**. Furthermore, additional security measures are being implemented for trains operating at stations like **Chaman**, with **five additional Railway Police personnel** assigned to these routes.
To enhance security on these trains, security personnel have been equipped with **modern weapons** and **walkie-talkie sets** for better communication and coordination. Railway Police **SHOs** now personally supervise security arrangements during the arrival and departure of trains.
Looking ahead, the **Ministry of Railways** has announced the introduction of an **Integrated Security System Project**. A budget of **Rs. 3.1 billion** has been recommended for the project in the **upcoming fiscal year**. Additionally, **Rs. 5.2 billion** has been earmarked for **infrastructure upgrades**, which will further bolster security measures at railway stations and on trains.
These steps reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring the **safety of railway passengers** in the face of growing security threats in the region.
