Is Charging Your Smartphone to 100% Every Time Hurting Your Battery Life?

Are you often frustrated with your smartphone’s battery life? This is a common problem, but many times it’s due to a very common habit—charging your phone to 100% every time.

In today’s world, most people leave their phones plugged in overnight so that they wake up to a fully charged device. However, this habit can be quite damaging to your smartphone battery in the long run.

Smartphone manufacturers actually advise users not to leave their phones plugged in for long periods or charge them overnight. They recommend charging your phone between 30% and 70% to help maintain its battery life for a longer time.

When you charge your phone to 100% every time, the battery starts to degrade much faster over time. Experts explain that when the phone reaches a full charge and you continue charging it, the battery receives excessive voltage, which alters its chemical structure and shortens its lifespan. According to experts, charging to 100% each time can cause the battery to deteriorate 10-15% faster.

Most smartphones use lithium-ion batteries, which naturally degrade over time. Charging your phone when it’s almost completely drained, or continuously charging it fully, causes stress on the battery. This stress accelerates its degradation. Charging between 30% and 70% reduces this stress and helps improve the battery’s long-term health.

Today, most phones display the battery percentage, allowing users to monitor it. Apple iPhones even have a setting that allows users to limit charging to 80% to protect battery health.

Experts suggest that charging your phone between 20% and 80% is ideal for maximizing battery life. However, charging your phone to 100% occasionally isn’t necessarily harmful, especially when you need to use your phone for an important task or when facing power outages.

Another factor that affects battery health is where you charge your phone. Charging it on soft surfaces like a bed or pillow can cause overheating, which might lead to battery damage or, in worst cases, an explosion. Charging on harder surfaces, like wood or stone, is safer because they don’t absorb as much heat.

So, while charging your phone to 100% isn’t the best practice for long-term battery health, it’s okay to do so occasionally when necessary. Just ensure that you’re charging your phone safely and managing its temperature properly to avoid damage.
