Gillespie Resigns as Pakistan’s Red-Ball Head Coach Amid Disputes with PCB
Lahore: The reasons behind Jason Gillespie’s resignation as Pakistan’s Red-Ball Head Coach have been revealed. According to media reports, Gillespie expressed dissatisfaction after being excluded from the selection committee and also requested a salary increase, which was rejected by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman. Despite PCB’s request for him to continue with the team, Gillespie declined to extend his tenure.
Gillespie, along with former white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten, had proposed adding certain support staff members, a move which was also dismissed by the PCB. This led to tensions, with Gillespie eventually threatening to resign.
He formally tendered his resignation just ahead of the Test series against South Africa, which was accepted by the PCB. As a result, former cricketer Aqib Javed has been appointed as the interim head coach for the Test format.
Notably, this marks the second significant resignation from the coaching staff, following Gary Kirsten’s departure before Pakistan’s tour of Australia. Discussions regarding permanent appointments for the coaching staff are expected to continue over the next few weeks.
