Which Oil Is Better for Hair Growth? What Is the Correct Amount and Method of Applying Oil?

ISLAMABAD (Daily Qudrat): For centuries, oil has been used to treat dryness, hair breakage, hair fall and baldness; however, experts say there is no solid evidence for the claim that applying oil to the head makes hair grow faster.
Experts say that hair growth occurs from the roots present in the scalp, which are affected by hereditary factors, hormones, diet and overall health.
Applying oil does not make hair roots grow faster, but it can help keep hair soft and protect it from weather changes and breakage.
**Which oil is better for hair?**
1. Coconut oil: According to research, coconut oil helps reduce protein loss from hair and protect it from breakage, especially for dry and damaged hair.
2. Argan oil: It helps reduce hair dryness, tangles and roughness and makes hair soft and shiny.
3. Almond oil: It is useful for maintaining moisture in hair and making combing easier; however, scientific evidence regarding hair growth is limited.
4. Rosemary oil: Experts say that some preliminary research has shown the potential benefits of this oil against hair loss; however, further research is needed.
Rosemary oil should be used mixed with another oil instead of applying it directly to the scalp.
5. Castor oil: Castor oil is used to make hair thicker and longer, but there is no solid scientific evidence regarding its effectiveness in increasing hair growth.
**How many times a week should oil be applied?**
According to experts, each person’s hair type and scalp are different, so there is no single fixed routine for applying oil. Generally, applying oil once or twice a week before washing hair is appropriate. It is not necessary to leave oil on overnight; washing hair without oil for a few days is also sufficient.
**Does applying oil reduce the damage of hair dryers and straighteners?**
Repeated use of hair dryers, straighteners and curling machines makes hair dry, weak and prone to breakage. Oil can help keep hair soft and reduce friction; however, it does not provide complete protection from heat.
It is necessary to use special heat-protection products for hair, avoid excessive temperatures and gently detangle wet hair.
**Hair fall and hair breakage are not the same condition**
According to experts, hair breakage is usually caused by heat, chemical products and combing harshly, while hair fall is also caused by hereditary factors, hormones, illness, mental stress, medications and nutritional deficiencies.
If hair is continuously falling, suddenly falling in large quantities, or if there is itching, redness and inflammation on the scalp, a dermatologist should be consulted; in such a case, merely applying oil is not the solution to the problem.
**Necessary precautions for healthy hair**
A balanced diet and the use of appropriate amounts of protein, iron and other essential nutrients are important for hair health.
In addition, adequate sleep, reduction of mental stress and gentle hair care are also necessary.
Experts advise that dietary supplements should not be used without a doctor’s advice.
According to experts, applying oil to hair helps maintain its beauty, softness and strength, but no oil can be declared a guaranteed treatment for rapid hair growth.
