Maryam Nawaz Wants to Take Society Back to the Stone Age of Tit-for-Tat Violence, Says Latif Khosa

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and senior lawyer Sardar Latif Khosa has strongly criticised Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz over her recent remarks, saying her approach could promote lawlessness, extremism and a culture of revenge in society.

Speaking to journalist Shakir Mahmood Awan, Khosa said Maryam Nawaz wanted to take society back to the Stone Age, where people responded to violence with violence, theft with theft and revenge with revenge.

He described her remarks as reflecting a violent mindset and said such statements could encourage people to take the law into their own hands.

“What Maryam Bibi has said is tantamount to promoting lawlessness. I do not think her mental balance is right,” Khosa remarked.

He questioned why no court was taking suo motu notice of the matter and said Maryam Nawaz should be held accountable for her statement.

Criticising the chief minister, Khosa said she appeared to have assumed the roles of executioner, judge and law enforcement authority, whereas the power to enforce laws and punish offenders rested with the relevant legal institutions.

He warned that if individuals began taking the law into their own hands and punishing entire families or tribes for the crimes of one person, society would move towards revenge rather than justice.

Giving examples of tribal traditions, Khosa referred to past incidents involving the Khoso and Leghari tribes, saying that in some cases, the killing of a person from one tribe was followed by the retaliatory killing of another individual from the opposing tribe, even if that person was innocent.

He also cited instances of cattle theft in which one tribe would respond to the theft of a buffalo by stealing goats and cows belonging to the other tribe.

The PTI leader warned that Maryam Nawaz’s statements could push society back towards such tribal and retaliatory practices, where people settled disputes through personal decisions instead of relying on courts and the legal system.

Khosa stressed that the supremacy of law must be maintained in the country and nobody should be allowed to pursue individual or collective revenge.

He urged Maryam Nawaz to reconsider her statements and political position to ensure that the principles of justice, legal accountability and the rule of law were upheld in society.
