Point Nemo: Earth’s Most Remote and Desolate Place, Closer to Astronauts Than Humans

ISLAMABAD – Point Nemo is the most remote and desolate location on Earth, also known as the “Pole of Inaccessibility.” Located in the very middle of the Pacific Ocean, this place is so far from human population that astronauts in space are closer to it than humans living on Earth.

When the International Space Station (ISS) passes over it, the astronauts’ distance from here is merely 400 kilometers, while the nearest island with humans on Earth is 2,688 kilometers away.

Because of this immense distance and isolation, space agencies around the world use it as a “spacecraft cemetery” to safely crash decommissioned satellites and space stations.

In Latin, “Nemo” means “no one,” which perfectly reflects its nameless silence and solitude.
