World Decides to Change Global Time System, Votes to Abolish Leap Seconds

PARIS (Qudrat Daily) — The General Conference on Weights and Measures has decided to change the global time system, approving the abolition of leap seconds through a vote. Under the new system, the current practice of keeping Coordinated Universal Time highly accurate with the help of atomic clocks will change, and the new time system will come into effect from May 20, 2027.

According to local and foreign media reports, the General Conference on Weights and Measures has decided to change the global time system and approved the abolition of leap seconds through a vote, under which the 50-year-old time tradition of leap seconds has been formally approved for elimination, after which the new system will come into effect worldwide from May 20, 2027.

Leap seconds are used worldwide to keep the time system synchronized with the Earth’s rotation. Now it has been decided to abolish them. The General Conference on Weights and Measures has approved the abolition of leap seconds through a vote. In the current system, Coordinated Universal Time must be kept extremely accurate with the help of atomic clocks, while minor changes also continue to occur in the speed of the Earth’s rotation.

To reduce the difference between these two systems, 27 additional seconds have been added since 1972. According to media reports, the sudden change in the time system created problems for modern computer systems and digital platforms. During the addition of leap seconds in 2012, 2015, and 2016, some systems were affected.

In 2012, platforms such as Reddit, LinkedIn, and Mozilla also faced technical problems.

In the future, the need to add negative leap seconds could also have arisen, which raised fears of further disruptions in computer systems. Therefore, it has been decided to exempt the global time system from additional second changes in the future. Under the new system, the difference between Coordinated Universal Time and time based on the Earth’s rotation will be kept limited to one hour. With this arrangement, the global time system can remain stable for several centuries. According to scientists, there will be no effect on the lives of ordinary people, but the world’s digital and internet infrastructure will be protected from dangerous technical disruptions.
